abstract = "This paper describes the land use dynamics of a river basin in
southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. Using visual
interpretation of aerofotos and digital processing of Landsat
data, the study detected significant decrease of agricultural
activities (to less than the half of initial amount) and expansion
of secondary forests in the period between 1956 e 2000. Soil
Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), near infrared and medium
infrared based, shows to be most sensitive to land use changes
captured by Landsat data. Vegetation density and regrowth stages
could not be correlated with SAVI values and will have to be
investigated by further studies. The land use changes occurred in
a landscape within densely populated atlantic forest region known
for severe deforestation processes. Actually, in the studied
region, these processes appear to have taken place already in the
first half of the 20th century, meanwhile selective logging
practices, without forest conversion, continued until the
                         eighties.",
